BEENLEIGH

Founded in 1884, Beenleigh Artisan Distillery is the oldest registered distillery in Australia, located on the banks of the Albert River in Eagleby. For over 140 years, it has utilized locally sourced molasses from the surrounding fertile sugar belts and a unique combination of copper pot and column stills. The 2013 vintage is particularly significant as it underwent 10 years of maturation, with a portion of that time spent in the intense heat of Queensland's tropical climate before being further aged in continental conditions. This dual-climate maturation, combined with the distillery's heritage yeast strains, resulted in a spirit of remarkable depth, characterized by notes of dried stone fruits, spice, and the distinct "industrial" elegance associated with long-term barrel interaction.

Velier has redefined the role of the independent bottler by positioning itself as a "tropical dependent" selector, operating under the conviction that spirits reach their peak complexity when matured in their place of origin. Unlike traditional European bottlers who often transport "green" spirits to temperate climates to age slowly and minimize evaporation, Velier champions the tropical aging process, where high heat and humidity accelerate the interaction between the wood and the distillate. This reliance on the tropical environment is not merely a preference but a core philosophy; it embraces the aggressive angels' share (often exceeding 8% annually) as a necessary cost for achieving the concentrated, ester-heavy, and deeply integrated flavor profiles that define their releases. By keeping the barrels in their native terroir, Velier ensuring that the "soul" of the distillery—from the local micro-bacteria in the warehouse to the atmospheric pressure—is fully captured in the final bottle.

BEENLEIGH 2013 was distilled in single column and redistilled in the distillery’s pot still in August and September 2013. This rum has been aged in ex-bourbon barrels in the tropical climate of the Beenleigh warehouse with a total angel's share of more than 25%.
