LAST WARD

LAST WARD

The Velier Last Ward 2007 is a significant release in the world of Barbadian rum, representing the "triple distilled" heritage of the Mount Gay distillery under the tenure of the Ward family. Distilled in 2007, this expression was produced entirely in traditional copper pot stills, a departure from the more common pot-and-column blends typically associated with Barbados. The name "Last Ward" pays homage to Frank Ward, who oversaw the distillery before it transitioned to new ownership, marking this bottling as a liquid legacy of a specific, ancestral style of distillation that prioritized weight, oily texture, and high-ester complexity.

Matured for ten years in a tropical climate, this 2007 vintage was aged exclusively in ex-bourbon casks, which provided a structured foundation for its powerful aromatic profile. On the nose, it offers an intense array of ripe tropical fruits, burnt sugar, and the characteristic "medicinal" and savory notes that define heavy pot still Bajan rum. The palate is dense and concentrated, delivering layers of dark chocolate, leather, and spiced oak, all leading to a remarkably long and evolving finish. Bottled at a robust cask strength of 59% ABV, the Last Ward 2007 stands as a pinnacle of Bajan craft, celebrated by collectors for its purity and its connection to the storied history of the St. Lucy parish.
